Gift horse

November 1858.  As Charlotte’s offer of a horse to her brother Sir George Henry Scott Douglas is warmly received, it transpires that their relationship has been somewhat strained of late.

8th Monday
M. & I went to lunch at SWP.  Mariquita did not come down till afterwards.  D. was so nice.  I have not been in such favour for a long time.  H. S. called;* presented me with my bet, doubled, – 2 prs white gloves, scented.  Then D. Mackenzie came.  Bade them all farewell, & home for dinner

Notes

H. S. called
Harry Scott of Ancrum.  He and Charlotte seem to have got over the bad feeling of October.
